Research: Sound in Teen Movie openings

Sound in movie openings is very important and it does many different things. Sound can create the mood of the rest of the film, it can help tell the story of the movie and the dialogue in the sound can also help tell the story. The sound can also contribute to allowing the audience to know that a flashback is taking place.

Sound can easily create a certain mood for a film, if chosen correctly.

Research: 1

Step Up is a teen film about a boy from a deprived area in America who gets a chance to earn a scholarship in an Arts school through dancing with a ballet student already in the school. Throughout the film, he falls in love with the girl he dancing, conflict arises with him and his best friend and dancing some ballet himself, even know he loves dancing to hip hop.



The sound used in the opening of sets an urban mood and it also suggests conflict as the music is quite aggressive. We can see from the music that the movie is a dancing film because the sound is upbeat - a song that would be danced to.

Research 2:

21 Jump Street is an action comedy film where two unachieved cops are sent to an American high school and are made to blend in with the drug dealers and bring them down. This is humorous because it is unrealistic for two grown men to blend in with high school children.




This sound exaggerates the humorous tone of the movie as this song was made to be funny and it has a 'jokey' feeling and lyrics, which related to the the genre of the film.

Research 3:

You got served is a film that is based upon dance battles, conflict in friendships and conflict in morals, so it is highly based on conflict. It is mostly about two teenage boys that live in America and have a passion for dancing, to hip hop music and they need to win battles to financially support themselves and their families. 

Th sound used in the opening of this film is a urban song which relates to the style that is danced to during the duration of the movie. It is also quite aggressive which represents the dance battles and the other conflicts in the teen film.
