Genres and Conventions

What is a teen film?
Teen films are a genre marketed for teenagers/young adults where the plot involves special interests to teenagers/young adults.

Popular locations in teen films include:

- Within the home.
   - The main character's living room in Scream is used a lot because the caller likes asking about scary movies and that's where she watches them. This adds to the element of horror in the film, that you can't be safe even in your own home.
The most popular locations include locations within school, sports locations and 'hang out locations'.

High School Musical includes uses of locations within school and sports locations as the film is a romance musical teen film about a stereotypical jock who is captain of the school's basketball team and has to choose between winning with his basketball team and performing in the school's musical. The film also deals with different cliques formed within the school.

Another popular romance musical teen film is Grease. The film also shows the theme of cliques that are formed in the high school and shows locations such as the high school and the "hang out" diner.

However, Carrie is a popular horror supernatural film that is set in high school and deals the theme of bullying. The supernatural element is that she's telekinetic. It was originally released in 1976 with a remake being released in 2013.

A new popular sub genre for teen films is dystopian, set in a futuristic world run by the government also containing a romantic subplot with films such as The Hunger Games and Divergent where the theme is to beat the government.
